It is sold in the standard variety of thicknesses and sizes. This type of drywall is affordable, easy to install, and is characterized by its typically pure white appearance. This type of drywall provides moderate sound and heat insulation and can provide protection from open flames.

Mobile homes are designed to be light, but the walls still have wooden studs and manufacturers will often use 1/4-inch paneling to cover the framing. The wall studs are spaced to support 4-by-8 panels, so the mobile home drywall, which comes in 8ft by 4ft sheets, should be no problem to install. Choose the thinnest drywall sheets you can get, 3/8-inch is lighter than 1/2-inch and will be easier to handle and come with a tapered edge or straight edge. Once you have measured the area you need to cover, and estimated the number of sheets needed, add a percentage to your total for waste.

Older mobile homes usually have blown-in insulation in the attic if there’s any at all. If you have beams you’ll need to remove them before you get to the gypsum paneling. Those beams are usually just 3-sided “boxes” screwed directly into a truss sitting above it. Unscrewing and pulling it down with a pry bar is the easiest way.

You’ll notice that VOG has a shiny finish with strips running from the floor to the ceiling, which are used to cover the seams. A sheet of 1/4″ thick drywall that is 4′ x 8′ weighs approximately 38.4 lbs. Drywall that is 5/8″ thick is, of course, a little heavier, at 2.31 pounds per square foot or 73.92 pounds per sheet which is entirely too much for mobile home ceilings.

After material and labor are added in, the cost per panel can range from around $40.00 to $60.00. If you’re looking at older mobile homes, you’re likely to find Vinyl on Gypsum wallboards, and most new manufactured homes have either Paper on Gypsum wallboard or finished drywall options. Various thicknesses of drywall can be used for walls, but usually, most people prefer to go with ½ inch thick drywall to ensure adequate insulation and fire protection. Thicker drywall may be a bit more expensive than most people are willing to pay and might provide far more sound insulation than you bargain for unless this is your goal.

Although they are extremely useful you should be mindful when handling them as they are quite thin and rigid, which means that they can be brittle. Plaster is a building method which involves applying plaster over narrow wooden strips or a board which is nailed to a vertical frame or wall stud. In addition to being easy to install, drywalls are also one of the most energy-efficient wall materials out there. Drywalls keep the house insulated from the outside which translates into a cooler house during the summer and warm during the winter.

If you decide to replace the ceiling panels as well, then you should drywall the ceiling before you tackle the walls. This makes for better wall-to-ceiling joints since the wall boards will be secured tight to the ceiling boards. The joints are covered with batten strips during assembly rather than using tape to cover the seams like drywall.

Even easier to carry are ultra-light 1/2-inch panels, which are 13 pounds lighter than conventional 1/2-inch drywall. When wall panels come in lengths and widths other than these multiples of 4 feet, they are usually not drywall panels but are instead cement board or a drywall alternative, such as DRIcor Smartwall.
